"Tinkle"

Housetraining tips from a Hot Dog

Hey Shorty,

I’m a new puppy and my new human parents keep taking me outside and repeating the same things.  What does it mean when they ask you to tinkle?
Signed,
Confused

Dear Confused,

I remember those days, my Mom said the exact thing to me and in fact she still does.  She started out saying “Do your stuff” but at some point she started saying "tinkle".  It took awhile but I finally realized that she wanted me to squat and urinate.

I know it’s very hard for you, a lot of human dog experts say that a dog under three or four months is not sufficiently developed enough to be fully house trained – that’s what they call it. Don’t give up though, you'll keep getting better at it until eventually your human parents will likely allow you to roam the house freely.

What made me understand was a lot of repetition.  When I was a pup, my Mom would give me an ice cube about an hour before bed, the cold water would then go through my system quickly and I really needed to go by the time we were ready for bed.

One thing that took Mom quite a while to figure out was patience.  Especially in the mornings, she learned that if she tinkled herself before getting me from bed then she was able to be a lot more patient with me.

Good luck, I’m sure you’ll do fine. If you have an accident or two, their are  lots of products to help your parents easily clean up. Your parents should be giving you a great deal of praise when you do urinate outside, if they don’t give them the pitiful puppy dog eyes and make them feel really guilty.
